As a parent and very active volunteer in my child's school, I am strongly opposed to school "choice". When schools are fully funded, they are capable of meeting the needs of every child. It does not make sense to siphon funds away from our public schools and give it to charter schools that cannot guarantee to deliver what they promise. This is a slap in the face to the hard working teachers in PWC and seems like a political play rather than an effort to do what is best for our children.
This is not the job of the BOCS. The job of the BOCS is to fully fund a robust school system. Making statements like this distracts from their jobs and creates tension in the school system. Less talk more work please!
ACLU: All kids living in the US have the right to a free public education. And the Constitution requres that all kids be given equal educational opportunity no matter what their race, ethnic background, religion, or sex, or whether they are rich or poor, citizen or non-citizen.
Vouchers siphon money from public education. The BOCS, through the RSA, needs to properly fund PWCS which is already underfunded!
Why would the county use its public time and resources to advertise for private schools? That makes no sense. Its sole and essential responsibility is to its own educational institutions and hard-working employees. Sounds like a thinly-veiled attempt by Corey to score points for his personal Senate campaign. He can do that on his own time with his own money.

Don't any of you realize that school choice is used as a divisive and highly political tactic (guise) to divide us further and segregate communities while promoting school privatization? This is a very insulting move considering that many charter and private schools around the country under "choice" do not serve children of special needs.
As a parent of two children in Prince William County PUBLIC schools, I find it ridiculous to devote a week to charter and voucher programs that we (thankfully) do not have. Instead, we should be focused on supporting and improving our public schools to serve ALL children in our county. I don’t want you to bring in charters and vouchers- I want you to fully fund the school system we already have. Please vote no, and keep kids above party politics and pandering.
As a mother and educator in our public schools I find this counter productive in what our community is asking of the BOCS. We want you all to support our educators and fund our schools. I urge you to listen to our county and know we want our children to attend public schools and we want them funded. We ask you to vote no.
I am disappointed that BOCS would endorse “school choice,” rather than support our excellent public schools and teachers. I would rather see a week honoring our teachers, rather than this symbolic dog whistle.
PWCS is ranked dead last in per pupil spending in the metro DC area with the largest class sizes, so why is BOCS voting on a school choice resolution? School choice, which encompasses charters & vouchers, would essentially siphon funds from PWCS into a parallel (& unregulated) system. This is wasteful spending at its worse and exacerbates our problems. This parent urges you to please vote NO.
I hope you choose to recognize what choice looks like in PWCS: IB, AP, SIGNET, GEMS, Culinary arts, Cambridge Programme, Governor's School, Biotech program, Fine and Performing Arts, cosmetology, Math/Science programs, Growing Our Own, Engineering, World Languages, Head Start, Robotics, Traditional Schools, JROTC, Environmental and Natural Sciences, IT, Dual Enrollment, Agriculture, Automotive, Cyber Security, HVAC, Plumbing, Welding, Special Education... PWCS looks pretty amazing to me.
While parents and students deserve quality choices when it comes to education, "School Choice" as it has become colloquially defined is problematic for any number of reasons. It ignores the fact that quality alternative schools are already administered by the public school system.
The term is also used as a marketing ploy to deceive voters and taxpayers into subsidizing private schools & religious schools. Keep public funding in public schools. Please stop marketing school choice as a benefit.
As a taxpayer and teacher, I oppose this proclamation. Celebrating School choice is the antithesis of what the BOCS should be doing, which is supporting and providing the needed funds for our public schools. Privatizing education, an endeavor that have proven time and time again to not improve education outcomes for students, should not be celebrated.
While this proclamation takes no action to privatize our schools, it speaks volumes about what the BOCS believes. Please vote against it.
