I think it's good to have a citizen position on the audit committee, whom the whole board takes responsibility for appointing but does not invest in their day-to-day business. Our inquiries helped save our county (and its future budgets for nice stuff and schools as well as affordable taxes) from hundreds of millions of dollars in inadequately planned spending.
